Philadelphia Parks and Recreation opened its seasonal outdoor pools on June 15 with dedicated lap hours at multiple sites. Swimmers now have consistent access to 25-yard lanes at several locations through Labor Day.
High temperatures this July have pushed more residents outdoors for exercise. The city's active wellness scene favors low-cost public options over indoor gyms, and lap swimming fits that pattern because it requires only basic gear and offers measurable distance goals. Local recreation centers report steady weekday morning crowds before 9 a.m.
The FDR Park pool on South Broad Street added two extra lap lanes this year after a 2025 renovation. Swimmers share the 50-meter main tank with recreational users but hold priority between 7 and 9 a.m. weekdays. A second option sits inside Wissahickion Valley Park at the Valley Green section, where a series of stone-lined basins along the creek allow continuous laps when water levels stay above two feet. Both spots fall under the same city permit system.
Philadelphia Parks and Recreation logged 62,400 pool visits across all outdoor sites during June 2025. Adult day passes cost five dollars, while season passes run forty dollars for city residents. Lap lanes open at 7 a.m. daily at FDR Park and remain available until noon on weekdays.
Check the city website the night before for any maintenance closures, then arrive with a towel and lock for the changing area. Bring a printed season pass or pay the five-dollar fee on site. Swimmers who prefer the Wissahickon basins should park at the Valley Green lot off Forbidden Drive and walk the short path to the first stone pool. Early arrivals secure the clearest water before afternoon runoff increases.
